Leaders must create a personalized mentoring strategy to set up their staff for success in terms of professional development and career growth.

One department in my organization experienced significant employee turnover largely due to longer onboarding processes. When staff needed to obtain different certifications or were learning an application for the first time, they often relied on independent learning and class observations.
This led to inconsistent content knowledge and a wide array of system readiness among the staff. Something needed to be done to help newer staff feel more confident in their role and improve their performance.
To aid Leaders in establishing a culture of compassion, we created the Mentoring 101 course to address the needs of the staff.
Through the Mentoring 101 course, Leaders were challenged to understand onboarding from the perspective of the Mentee and use this information to personalize mentoring experiences for staff.
The execution of this course could not be limited to a self-paced eLearning because we wanted to create opportunities for the Leaders to share their personal stories and collaborate with each other when discussing difficult experiences that they had when developing staff. We decided to take the format of an Instructor Workshop.
After gaining approval from Leadership to proceed with creating the course, we created a course outline that provided an overview of the agenda, lesson plans for each section, and the estimated duration for each section. From there, we created an engaging presentation that offered thoughtful visuals and relevant exercises to reinforce course materials.
This sample is a collection of slides taken from that presentation. The goal of the workshop was to provide Leaders with the opportunity to learn key concepts involving how to mentor staff and apply their understanding of those concepts in various scenarios with peers.
Upon completion of the Mentoring 101 course, Leadership also finalized a standardized onboarding process for all staff. All newer staff understood what was expected of them from the beginning of the onboarding process. Leaders were better equipped with the tools to personalize the mentoring experiences for their staff. This lowered the time it took for staff to become productive with new applications.
This successful partnership with Leadership helped lead to a change in the department’s culture and increased their employee retention rate.
